Scene 1: Entering the Mosque

ذَهَبَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ. دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ بِهُدُوءٍ، وَوَجَدَ رَجُلًا اسْمُهُ عُمَرُ جَالِسًا يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ.

Dhahaba Aḥmadu ilā al-masjidi qabla ṣalāti aẓ-ẓuhr. Dakhala al-masjida bi-hudūʾin, wa-wajada rajulan ismuhu ʿUmarun jālisan yaqraʾu al-Qurʾān.

Ahmed went to the mosque before the noon prayer. He entered quietly and found a man named Omar sitting and reading the Quran.

أَحْمَدُ

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum.

Peace be upon you.

عُمَرُ

وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ.

Wa-ʿalaykumu as-salāmu wa-raḥmatullāh.

And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah.

أَحْمَدُ

هَلْ أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَجْلِسَ هُنَا؟

Hal astaṭīʿu an ajlisa hunā?

May I sit here?

عُمَرُ

نَعَمْ، تَفَضَّلْ.

Naʿam, tafaddal.

Yes, please.

أَحْمَدُ

شُكْرًا لَكَ.

Shukran laka.

Thank you.

قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ

Qabla aṣ-Ṣalāh

Scene 2: Before the Prayer

جَلَسَ أَحْمَدُ بِجَانِبِ عُمَرَ، وَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْقُرْآنِ الَّذِي فِي يَدِهِ.

Jalasa Aḥmadu bijānibi ʿUmar, wa-naẓara ilā al-Qurʾāni alladhī fī yadihi.

Ahmed sat next to Omar and looked at the Quran in his hand.

أَحْمَدُ

مَاذَا تَقْرَأُ؟

Mādhā taqraʾu?

What are you reading?

--:--

عُمَرُ

أَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ يَاسِينَ.

Aqraʾu sūrata Yāsīn.

I’m reading Surah Yasin.

أَحْمَدُ

هَلْ تَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ؟

Hal taqraʾu al-Qurʾāna kulla yawmin?

Do you read the Quran every day?

عُمَرُ

نَعَمْ، أُحَاوِلُ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ قَلِيلًا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.

Naʿam, uḥāwilu an aqraʾa qalīlan kulla yawmin.

Yes, I try to read a little every day.

أَحْمَدُ

مَا شَاءَ اللهُ. أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَفْعَلَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا.

Mā shāʾ Allāh. Urīdu an afʿala dhālika ayḍan.

Mashallah. I want to do that too.

عُمَرُ

اِبْدَأْ بِصَفْحَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ.

Ibdaʾ bi-ṣafḥatin wāḥidatin kulla yawmin.

Start with one page every day.

وَقْتُ الصَّلَاةِ

Waqtu aṣ-Ṣalāh

Scene 3: Prayer Time

--:--

بَعْدَ قَلِيلٍ، رَفَعَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ الْأَذَانَ. وَقَفَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَعَدُّوا لِلصَّلَاةِ.

Baʿda qalīlin, rafaʿa al-muʾadhdhinu al-adhān. Waqafa an-nāsu wa-istaʿaddū liṣ-ṣalāh.

After a short while, the muezzin called the adhan. The people stood up and prepared for prayer.

أَحْمَدُ

هَلْ حَانَ وَقْتُ الصَّلَاةِ؟

Hal ḥāna waqtu aṣ-ṣalāh?

Is it time for prayer?

--:--

عُمَرُ

نَعَمْ، سَتَبْدَأُ الصَّلَاةُ بَعْدَ قَلِيلٍ.

Naʿam, satabdaʾu aṣ-ṣalātu baʿda qalīl.

Yes, the prayer will begin shortly.

أَحْمَدُ

أَيْنَ نَقِفُ؟

Ayna naqifu?

Where should we stand?

--:--

عُمَرُ

تَعَالَ، نَقِفُ فِي هَذَا الصَّفِّ.

Taʿāl, naqifu fī hādhā aṣ-ṣaff.

Come, let’s stand in this row.

أَحْمَدُ

حَسَنًا.

Ḥasanan.

Okay.

--:--

وَقَفَ أَحْمَدُ وَعُمَرُ مَعَ الْمُصَلِّينَ، وَصَلَّوْا مَعَ الْإِمَامِ.

Waqafa Aḥmadu wa-ʿUmaru maʿa al-muṣallīn, wa-ṣallaw maʿa al-imām.

Ahmed and Omar stood with the worshippers and prayed with the imam.

بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ

Baʿda aṣ-Ṣalāh

Scene 4: After the Prayer

بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ، جَلَسَ أَحْمَدُ وَعُمَرُ قَلِيلًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ.

Baʿda aṣ-ṣalāh, jalasa Aḥmadu wa-ʿUmaru qalīlan fī al-masjid.

After the prayer, Ahmed and Omar sat in the mosque for a little while.

أَحْمَدُ

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، أَشْعُرُ بِرَاحَةٍ كَبِيرَةٍ.

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, ashʿuru bi-rāḥatin kabīrah.

Alhamdulillah, I feel very peaceful.

عُمَرُ

وَأَنَا أَيْضًا. الْمَسْجِدُ مَكَانٌ هَادِئٌ وَجَمِيلٌ.

Wa-anā ayḍan. Al-masjidu makānun hādiʾun wa-jamīlun.

Me too. The mosque is a calm and beautiful place.

أَحْمَدُ

هَلْ تَأْتِي إِلَى هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ دَائِمًا؟

Hal taʾtī ilā hādhā al-masjidi dāʾiman?

Do you always come to this mosque?

--:--

عُمَرُ

نَعَمْ، أَتِي إِلَيْهِ كَثِيرًا.

Naʿam, ātī ilayhi kathīran.

Yes, I come here often.

أَحْمَدُ

إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ أَرَاكَ هُنَا مَرَّةً أُخْرَى.

In shāʾ Allāh arāka hunā marratan ukhrā.

Inshallah, I’ll see you here again.

عُمَرُ

إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ. فِي أَمَانِ اللهِ.

In shāʾ Allāh. Fī amāni Allāh.

Inshallah. May Allah protect you.

أَحْمَدُ

فِي أَمَانِ اللهِ.

Fī amāni Allāh.

May Allah protect you.

خَرَجَ أَحْمَدُ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ وَهُوَ سَعِيدٌ، وَقَرَّرَ أَنْ يَعُودَ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ التَّالِي.

Kharaja Aḥmadu mina al-masjidi wa-huwa saʿīdun, wa-qarrara an yaʿūda ilayhi fī al-yawmi at-tālī.

Ahmed left the mosque feeling happy and decided to return the next day.
